Who is Ricardo?

I was born in Asturias (North of Spain), a region where vast forests, high mountains and a beautiful seacoast combine in a unique natural paradise. Thus, it’s no wonder that since my early childhood, I was fascinated by the natural world surrounding us.

Currently, I’m a marine ecologist and my research focuses on understanding the functioning of marine ecosystems through the analysis of large databases. I believe this type of research is crucial to improve present marine conservation strategies, fisheries management systems and climate change policies.

To process all the information used in my analyses (both in situ and satellite data), I became proficient in R programming and learned about different data visualization strategies, statistical techniques, and mathematical models. These skills have allowed me to solve my research challenges and also support other teammates to solve their own. During my career, I have developed my leadership and scientific communication abilities through my contributions to peer-reviewed articles and congresses.

My participation in several oceanographic campaigns improved my understanding of how sampling is conducted in the field, which problems may arise, and how to address them back in the lab. I also collected great life and academic experiences abroad such as the EMBC MSc (currently IMBRSea) around Europe, a stay in the UC Davis BML (California) or my last postdoctoral position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Strathclyde (UK); all those experiences gave me the chance to work closely with people from other nationalities and develop my team working and language skills.

Beyond this, I love playing piano, reading a good book, hiking and travelling around the world.

Feel free to reach out if you want to talk about the complexity of the ocean, how to analyze those crazy data or that hike you did on your last trip.
